Ethical Fashion Guatemala

The Handmade Textiles Shoulder Bag is produced entirely by hand.

We are Casa Flor Ixcaco, a group of Mayan women, originally from a small town called San Juan La Laguna in Guatemala.

We, as empowered women, have kept alive the process and elaboration of handmade fabrics.

We work with organic cotton, natural dyes, and looms. of the waist, Our founder, Teresa Ujpan Perez, was a fighter, an inspiring and strong woman. More than 30 years ago, she and five other women started this project with the aim of improving the quality of life of our people and their families.

There are currently 34 women who work together to create handmade fabrics.

We sow our own cotton in 4 native colors (white, kakhy, ixcaco, and green).

We also work with natural dyes, using seeds, leaves, flowers, tree bark, etc. All our garments are woven on the traditional backstrap loom.

Description

Handmade Textiles Shoulder Bag.

Is part of the traditional dyeing techniques that the Lema Weaving Association in San Juan La Laguna is using dyes or colorants derived from locally found plants, trees, and insects in the Lake Atitlan area.

The roots, bark, leaves, berries, wood, and insects each produce a different color and hue.  A few of the plants that are used are coconut shells, pericón, pepper, purple basil, hibiscus flowers, and achiote, among many others.

Using the backloom method of weaving the Weaving Association San Juan La Laguna produces purses, bags, shawls, scarves, huipiles, serapes, tablecloths, placemats, napkins, cushions, bedspreads, hammocks, and many more items.
