Mugwort is used for?

Mugwort is used for?

$77.99

We deliver one pound of unprocessed single-origin Mugwart

Important Considerations:

  • Mugwort has seen continuous use in many cultures throughout the world as a medicinal, spiritual, and culinary ingredient since at least the Iron Age.
  • In contemporary culture, mugwort is commonly found in foods and drinks and remains a common ingredient in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean traditional medicine, where the leaves are used directly as food, or to obtain oil extracts, tinctures, or burned in what is called moxibustion.
  • The mugwort plant has been used as an anthelminthic, so it is sometimes confused with wormwood (Artemisia absinthium). The downy hairs on the underside of the leaves can be scraped off and used as effective tinder.
  • Mugwort has also been used therapeutically to relieve sleeplessness

In traditional Chinese medicine, mugwort is used in a pulverized and aged form – called moxa in English (from Japanese mouse) – to perform moxibustion, that is, to burn on specific acupuncture points on the patient’s body to achieve therapeutic effects.

There is a belief that moxibustion of mugwort is effective at increasing the cephalic positioning of fetuses who were in a breech position before the intervention.

A Cochrane review in 2012 found that moxibustion may be beneficial in reducing the need for ECV, but stressed a need for well-designed randomized controlled trials to evaluate this usage

Description

Historically, mugwort has been used in traditional systems of medicine in different parts of the world. Today, mugwort taken orally (by mouth) is promoted for digestive problems, irregular menstruation, and high blood pressure. It is also promoted as a sedative, laxative, and liver tonic.

Mugwort-origin herbs from Guatemala are a common medicinal herb, here’s a general overview of how mugwort herbs are prepared for various uses:

1. Harvesting:
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is typically harvested during its flowering stage, usually in the summer or early fall.
– Harvest the upper parts of the plant, including the leaves and flowering tops, using clean and sharp scissors or shears.

2. Drying:
To preserve the medicinal properties, it’s essential to dry mugwort thoroughly. This can be done by hanging small bundles of the stems upside down in a dark, well-ventilated area.
– Once completely dry, the leaves and flowers can be crumbled or ground into a coarse powder.

3. Herbal Tea:
Mugwort is often used to make herbal tea, which is believed to have various potential health benefits.
To make mugwort tea, steep a teaspoon of dried mugwort leaves or flowers in hot water for about 10-15 minutes. The tea can be consumed in moderation.
Due to its potential effects on the nervous system, it’s important to exercise caution and not consume excessive amounts of mugwort tea.

4. Tinctures:
Mugwort can be used to prepare tinctures. The process involves combining dried mugwort with a high-proof alcohol and allowing it to macerate for several weeks before straining.
Tinctures provide a concentrated form of mugwort that can be added to water or other beverages.

6. Culinary Uses:
Mugwort is occasionally used in culinary applications, such as flavoring in certain dishes or as an ingredient in herbal blends.

**Cautions:**
Mugwort contains thujone, a compound that can be toxic in high amounts. It’s essential to use mugwort in moderation and under the guidance of a healthcare professional or qualified herbalist.
Pregnant women should avoid using mugwort due to its potential effects on uterine contractions.
