One of Guatemala’s most striking health-conscious policies is its prohibition of glyphosate—a widely used herbicide linked to health risks such as cancer, liver damage, and endocrine disruption—and genetically modified organism (GMO) seeds. Glyphosate, produced by Bayer Monsanto, has been the subject of intense scrutiny due to its potential carcinogenic effects. Furthermore, Bayer Monsanto controls 67% of the world’s GMO seed supply, raising concerns about monopolistic practices and the global dependency.
